WORKSHOP:
Watercolor with Frank Francese
April 26-29, 2012
9-4 pm
Now Taking Enrollments

$400 tskw members/$450 non-members

www.ffrancese.com

The signature of a Francese watercolor is his use of big shapes, color, color and more color! No matter where a Francese watercolor is displayed, it will radiate a flash of color that literally jumps off the wall, immediately capturing the eye of the casual observer and art critic alike.

Francese brings a new style to the time tested combination of color and interesting shapes. His style employs the use of large brushes and a wet-on-wet method where in much of the color mixing is accomplished on the paper. Frank’s technique often produces brilliant, at other times subtle, and always unique shades of color. The only limits are the artist’s imagination and willingness to experiment with every combination of color on his palette.

Color provides the stage for the artist’s performance; shapes provide the characters. Detail is only used after the color and big shapes, positive and negative, are in place. Francese states “One must not over do the detail in any painting. It should be using it sparingly and with great thought. I have seen many paintings where the artist used too much detail, thinking that is the key to a great painting.” The goal of a Francese workshop is to teach artists of all skill levels to combine color, shape and then detail into a unique work of art.

Workshop Structure

Each day includes two demonstrations, the morning demonstration at 9 am and a second afternoon demonstration at 12:30pm. The demonstration will be 40-60 minutes in length, leaving the student to have ample time to work on their painting using the subject matter of that day’s demonstration.

About the instructor

Frank was born in Arizona, but has lived in Colorado for most of his life. A professional artist since 1976, he achieved the groundwork for his profession while attending Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. He has been painting watercolors since 1983. Frank has been published in Watermedia Painting with Stephen Quiller, along with many prominent periodicals including magazine cover stories, articles, and calendars. He has produced two instructional DVDs as well. Frank’s numerous awards include a Best of Show award from the Colorado Watercolor Society in 2009, and was chosen for the NWS national travelling exhibition in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Frank has also served as a national exhibition judge and juror for several watercolor societies. He teaches studio and plein-air workshops nationally and internationally.

3 Day Workshop
June 27-29, 10 am – 11:30 am

M $60/ NM $75, limit 12

This program will consider poetry’s role in relation to the larger social, cultural, and political issues of our time, demonstrating how to bring the critical methods of researcher, theorist, and interviewer to bear on the disciplined crafts of the creative writer. Doing so, the workshops will demonstrate how poetry can frame or reframe the human condition in all its cultural and environmental poignancies, thereby enabling writers and readers alike to construct a means for both personal and social transformations. Suitable for writers and readers of poetry as well as for anyone interested in art as a tool for committed citizenry or a means of social justice activism.

MORE ABOUT DIANE RAPTOSH

I am the daughter of a first-generation Sicilian-American mother possessed of countless eccentricities, boundless native intelligence, and an utterly singular way of seeing the world. It is in no small part due to her that I became a poet. She has been a source of strange and magnificent sayings, swatches of wisdom, and offbeat recommendations my whole life. In addition to a host of poets across place and time, she has given me the courage not merely to write poetry but to produce the kind of art that encourages conscience and seeks to transform. To this end, as poet and as simply someone alive, I keep close to me this sentiment from South African poet Dennis Brutus, who, when asked about the role of the poet in the world, said the following: “I believe that the poet—as a poet—has no obligation to be committed. What I’m saying is that I think everybody ought to be committed and the poet is just one of the many ‘everybodies.”

Learn to paint with dye on fabric! Discover for yourself the revolutionary method that this artist team has been exploring together for over 30 years. Perfect for those who love fabric, color and painting. Each student will create a small painted work by painting with fiber-reactive dyes on cotton broadcloth, using a water-soluble thickener, without stencils or resists. Gayle Fraas + Duncan Slade have taught workshops at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, East Bay Heritage Quilters, and the School of Visual Arts, NYC and are thrilled they will be sharing their techniques at TSKW.

Kick your landscape studies up a notch! Students will learn the techniques needed to capture a subject honestly and directly on site. They will experience the difference between direct outdoor and subsequent indoor painting, and then return to the studio and work from their observations to create freshly inspired work. Ireland will lead students through color exercises and individual and group critiques and encourage them to be inventive and take risks in order to convey emotional responses to the landscape – indoors or out.
