Ortega has traveled around the world and written as witness in response to its marvels and how deeply we are connected in a universal way, despite our various surfaces. Suggested text for use during this workshop and in the years to come: The Writing Life by Annie Dillard (Harper & Row, 1989).

Discover the lyricism and legacy of Shakespeare. In their day, his plays had the mass appeal of Harry Potter blockbusters. Now 400 years later, people are deterred by the language and other barriers. This course teaches thespians and non-actors alike to access Shakespeare fearlessly via scenes from his most popular comedy, Twelfth Night. This classically trained actress (with a prestigious M.A. — empha- sis on Shakespeare — London School of Speech and Theatre) will lead students to a rousing good time while enjoying time- less puns, put-downs, and humor.

Do you have an urge to write, with some rough ideas for plot, character, and setting? This class is for beginning writers or novelists who feel stuck. You won’t write a novel in a month, but the class will help you take some big steps forward (and learn where to turn when you get stuck again!) Led by this clinical psychologist turned prolific mystery writer, Isleib will bring her experience as a workshop presenter and fiction writing lecturer to offer skills to help you shape your stories. The final class will focus on what’s next: setting goals, avoiding procrastination, and the nuts and bolts of publishing. Isleib will be the featured presenter of the Library Lecture Series, February 6, 6 PM.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE:
Week 1: Develop your character. This week’s exercise will help the students understand their protagonist at a deeper level and develop motivations that will lead to plot layers. We’ll be asking questions such as what brings this character into the story? How will the character change as a result of what she faces, and learns about herself? What makes your character different from other people (inside and out)? What about the character’s family history may shape her stake in your story?

Week 2: The plot. Students will develop the major events of their novel during a 30-minute exercise and then brainstorm with the class to develop ideas further.

Week 3: Bringing your setting to life. Students will work on understanding how their chosen setting affects their story, and how they can more effectively use setting to show character and conflict.

Week 4: What now? This session will focus on setting goals, avoiding procrastination, finding resources and support, the nuts and bolts of getting published.

MICHAEL J MARRERO – Is an award winning Cuban American photographer/director/artist whose entire life has been dedicated to the creative. He was born and raised in the southernmost city in the United States – Key West. To call this unique, odd and wonderful would be an understatement. It was a time of smugglers, crooked politicians, rooster fights, the Mariel boatlift, Navy brawls and Shrimp Boat Row throw-downs. He has been attacked by monkeys, arrested in Cuba and once watched an old Santeria man bury a sack of pennies in hopes that it would bring him good fortune. After setting upon a formal education in arts he established himself as a driven professional with a sharp eye for both the micro and the macro with two passions – the moving image and the still image. His assignments have taken him from tropical paradises to shantytowns in Central America. He has dealt with both the volatile and the delicate, always finding the compassion, humor and humanity of his subjects.2g or higher USB jump Drive.
