Meet new friends and pick up fresh techniques! Led by Jestrow, this gender neutral group is for sharing, learning, collaborating and critiquing. Meet on the covered deck of the newly renovated residency cottage, bring some yarn, and either knitting needles or crochet hooks. Beginners will learn some basic stitches to get started. More advanced needleworkers may challenge their skills further. Over the three sessions — with plenty of conversation, laughter, and libations — you could complete a few small projects, while becoming a close knit group.

Around-the-world tour of basic sculpting techniques and mediums taught by Joris, former instructor at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Through demonstrations and lively discussion, students will be led through the exploration and challenges of a new medium each week; from introducing papier mâché during week one, to clay, then cement, and concluding week four with metal welding. Supply fee will vary weekly depending on materials. A new project will be completed during each 3-hour session. Dress for a messy, fun and fast paced creative class.

watercolor paint – Artist grade, tubes preferably- I like Daniel Smith paints.
watercolor paper – important to get Arches 140 or 300lbs, a block of watercolor paper would be ideal.  12×16 or bigger.  I prefer Hot press for my style of painting.

QUESTIONS
What excites you about teaching ?
I love watercolor and sharing what I know about it. My favorite part of the teaching process is those lightbulb moments that the students get each at their own pace and it happens throughout. I remember those lightbulb moments and remember how they feel….to be the one that leads someone to that is an awesome feeling.
What will participants come away with from this experience ?
My goal is to inspire the students and get them excited to paint in watercolor. They will leave with a basic understanding of how watercolor works, the tools and how to use them, and be able to look at watercolor paintings and say “I know how they did that !” and hopefully “I want to go home and paint and see what I can do !”
What informs your own work/ whose work influences you ?
As for my own work I am very interested in painting a body of work each year that tells a story…..narrative painting. Finding a thread that connects all of the paintings as a whole. The title of the show this year is “Living at the end of the world” and is loosely based on the book “Lord of the flies” . In my version the boys donʼt get rescued but grow up to become men living as a tribe on a island in harmony. I have taken this idea as my thread. I am using Key West and Provincetown MA. as the backdrop to paint these paintings which are both considered “End of the world” places. In each place the road comes to an end and both places have a magical aspect to them. While in South America last year I went to Terra del Fuego which literally is the end of the world and researched a tribe that lived there. I am using some of their tribal patterns on the models I am using to do these paintings. So this is my process and how I create a show.
My influences as a painter are Andrew Wyeth, and Winslow Homer. Looking at their watercolors always blows me away. As far as present day Artists that excite me are artistʼs that when I look at their work I know it is them. They have their own style and point of view. Some of the Artists that turn me on happen to live in Key West…I am a big fan of Michael Palmers work. Marlene Koenigʼs encaustics are very interesting. Capture the light of Key West painting outdoors ‘en plein air’ with a medium you are comfortable with or try something new. using the six-color palette favored by the early impressionists, students will develop confidence in color properties such as hue, chroma, and intensity. Welch has been a teacher and painter with active gallery representation for 30 years, as an “academic impressionist” he has made extensive study into the impressionist movement. Our staff and program committee will review and acknowledge all proposal submissions. We welcome workshops in any format, including one-day, one-week, and recurring term-based workshops. We welcome proposals for professional development for artists and creative people. And we always consider partnership suggestions, collaborative ideas, and suggestions to help us expand audience and outreach to the community. All submitted materials will be kept on file at TSKW, unless you request otherwise.
