Tickets are now on sale for the first annual Key West Artist Studio Tours on Saturday, February 4 from 11 am – 3 pm. Sponsored by The Studios of Key West, this event gives ticket holders intimate access to the working studios of several of the island’s best-known artists. Tickets for the self-guided tour are $20 per person, and can be purchased in advance at TSKW or online, or at each location on the tour on the day of the event.

“This is a the first opportunity for the public to meet and talk with participating artists on their home turf,” says Rosi Ware, TSKW board chair. “The tour offers a rare glimpse of the private workspaces of artists whose work graces national and international collections.”

The exciting and diverse group of artists included on the tour include sculptor John Martini, potters Charles Pearson and Tim Roeder, sculptor John McIntosh, painter Lynn Sherman, and painter Teresa Willis.

(Tickets can be picked up in advance at TSKW or can be collected at any of the stops on the tour. Maps will also be available.)

About the artists:

JOHN MARTINI‘s sculptures and monoprints are shown internationally in galleries and museums including Lucky Street Gallery, Key West; Sander Hudson Gallery, Atlanta; the Shidoni Annual in New Mexico; Galerie Antoine Laurentin, Paris; and Galleria Santamarta, Milan. His works are extensively represented in private and public collections including the large installation, “Head2Head,” at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. His studio is at 813 Emma Street.

WHITEHEAD STREET POTTERY Potters Charles Pearson and Tim Roeder have been on Whitehead Street for over 25 years, where they create porcelain, stoneware, and Raku-fired vessels. These ceramic pieces, in both hand-thrown and hand-built forms, incorporate function and elements of architectural design. Visitors to 322 Julia Street will see the potters’ kiln as well as the most gorgeous koi ponds ever created.

JON McINTOSH and his small surreal sculptures are described by ARTnews “an accomplished realist painter for many years, McIntosh has branched out into what he calls ‘Constructs’…small, generally disagreeable objects that are reminiscent of the best of the Surrealist surprises…his works on paper may call to mind…Robert Motherwell but the pluralism McIntosh embraces is purely Postmodern.” His studio is #9 upstairs at 513 Fleming Street.

LYNN SHERMAN says “I have always had a passion for sunlight and the shapes the shadows create on people, objects, houses, and landscapes. The light in Key West, the form of the houses, and the soft colors drew me instantly and for the last few years since moving here have been my muse.” Lynn studied painting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Barnes Foundation. Her small paintings of houses approach their subjects head on, flat, and stripped of all details except the light, the form, the shadows. Lynn’s own house is at 706 Ashe Street.

TERESA WILLIS, inspired by her own backyard, evolved into fine art from advertising design. Whether focused on a hibuscus, a rooster, or a mango, her bold paintings—displayed at her converted 1927 church gallery, Blue Turtle—present strong, singular local points. Of her pencil drawings of orchids, Willis says her style “covers the spectrum.” Her converted church is at 330 Julia Street.

At each location the artists, aided by TSKW docents, will be available to discuss their work. The artist’s work may also be available for purchase.

Tickets of admission to all five studios are $20. Advance ticket sales at TSKW, the Armory, 600 White Street, telephone (305) 600-1406. Tickets will be available at each location the day of the event.
