Painting with a palette knife offers a unique way to add both varying textures and colorful layers of paint rich in pigment and color while still expressing a dramatic energy. Through weekly demonstrations and one on one instruction, Rooney will show how to obtain physical dimension and impasto texture, while guiding you to mix and lay more accurate and vivid color and shapes, and avoid needless details. If you want to simplify your approach and add form and substance to painting- this class is for you!

Brushes- any stiff synthetic brush like Princeton 6300 or Silver Bristlon (or your own favorites) in sizes 2, 4, and 8, note the teacherís cart lists Silver Bristlon as a choice and you can use them for watercolor, acrylic or oil. Also if you have a Michaels Craft Store nearby you can use the brand American Painter. Find the stiffest synthetic. Also need a Liner (also called a Rigger) brush. It is thin and very long for detail work.

Easel or Pochade Box (TSKW has 18 easels to use… if you have one, bring one if not no problem!)

Please see www.jerrysartarama.com for suggestions; the lightweight, portable Feather easel weighs less than 2 pounds and retails for under $30; Mike Rooney, our instructor, was just featured in September’s Artist magazine endorsing the Monet Traveling Easel, currently  on sale.

A lightweight tray or portable table to put your materials on makes your life much easier, particularly in the field; it’s not required but will keep you from having to bend up and down all day.
