This workshop both introduces plein air (outdoor) painting in watercolor to the total novice, and hones the skills of intermediate and advanced students. The focus is on expressing a more-realistic interpretation of the incredible color and light of Key West in this fresh and luminous medium, thought by some to be the most eloquent. Students will be encouraged to progress as individuals, from whatever level they enter the class. Emphasis will be on acquiring new knowledge and skills on a personal basis. Students will learn confidence and a host of skills which can be applied to all of their work, in any medium.

Meet at stunning Fort Zachary Taylor (admission fee required) for a full day of painting its light and color.

Priscilla will demonstrate her award-winning watercolor techniques, from how to make sense of the elements of a scene right through drawing, composition and color mixing. Her emphasis is on maximizing the many advantages of the watercolor medium, such as its vivid hues and calligraphic brushstrokes, in a way which creates a realistic impression of depth and vitality. The subject will be a seascape.

Following the demonstration, students may duplicate her demonstrated painting or choose their own nearby subject, with individualized observations from the instructor. A lunch break is planned for 12:30, when students may gather at the park’s concession stand or continue painting. (students provide own lunch).

At 1:30, Priscilla will do a second demonstration, probably including architecture and people, to provide a variety of subject matter. As in the morning, students are free to choose their second subject, and paint with the guidance of the instructor.

If desired, a followup critique and discussion will be held from 3:45 to 4:30.
