Girl of Fire
About the event
Girl of Fire is a one-woman theatrical performance that blends storytelling, spoken word, song, and projected imagery. Through a poetic layering of time, space, and character, LaDonna BlueEye illuminates her path as a two-spirit woman and finds strength through the historical legacy of her ancestors from the Choctaw Nation. Her Indigenous identity, language, and culture serve as a source of healing through careers in the military, academia, and now live performance. Girl of Fire is a journey toward ancestral reconnection, following the trail of her family lineage who, even when forced from their homes, taught their children that anyone can fly, “when we forgot to fall.”
About the performer
Artist and activist LaDonna BlueEye (she/her) incorporates her lineage and lived experience to create work that crosses traditional boundaries. In the ways of the warrior, BlueEye served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at the end of the Cold War. She earned a PH.D in Public and Community Health. An enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, BlueEye now actively reclaims and reincorporates the language into her life and art. LaDonna holds a responsibility to ensure the language of her ancestors lives on for future generations.
