The Studios of Key West is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to supporting artists, inspiring creativity, and building community through exhibitions, performances, residencies, classes, literary programs, and public events.

The Studios officially launched its first public programming in 2006 and moved into its permanent home at 533 Eaton Street in 2015 following a major renovation of the historic building.

The Studios was founded by Peyton Evans, whose vision was to create a place where artists could gather, make new work, and engage with the Key West community.

Programs include visual art exhibitions, concerts, theater, artist residencies, workshops, literary events, youth education programs, rooftop gatherings, and community collaborations throughout the year.

The PEAR House is home to The Studios’ Peyton Evans Artist Residency program, where visiting artists from around the world live and work while developing new projects in Key West.

Hugh’s View is The Studios’ rooftop terrace and event space overlooking Old Town Key West. The space hosts concerts, happy hours, artist talks, and private events throughout the year.

Yes. Hugh’s View, our rooftop terrace overlooking Old Town Key West, is available for private rentals and can accommodate everything from intimate dinners to larger cocktail-style receptions.

Absolutely. Our spaces are frequently used for meetings, presentations, retreats, lectures, screenings, fundraisers, and community gatherings. We are proud to offer a 50% discount on venue rentals for nonprofit organizations.

We have a full liquor license so are able to offer full bar service. Modifications are available. We do not provide catering and do not have a full-size kitchen available on site. We are open to all caterers, but can also provide recommendations for our favorite local caterers.

Capacity varies by space. Hugh’s View can host up to 120 guests, Helmerich Theater up to 175, Sanger Gallery up to 60, and the Heinen Design Lab up to 30.

You can submit a rental inquiry through our website and a member of our team will follow up with availability, pricing, and next steps.

Yes. Patron Members receive 10% off venue rental rates, and Director’s Circle Members ($5,000+ annually) receive 15% off rentals.

We have tables and chairs, and offer set up and clean up of our own equipment.

We do not provide any entertainment for events. For some spaces there are stages available for you to hire your own live music or DJ. We have speaker equipment available

Our galleries are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am–4pm, unless otherwise noted. Admission to our exhibitions is always free.

First Thursday is The Studios’ monthly exhibition opening and community gathering. Join us on the first Thursday of the month from October through June from 6–8pm to explore new exhibitions, meet artists, enjoy drinks and conversation, and experience The Studios after hours.

Patrons are invited to an early exhibition preview at 5pm before First Thursday opens to the general public at 6pm. It’s a chance to see the new exhibitions first and spend time with artists and fellow supporters.

No. First Thursday exhibition openings are free and open to the public from 6–8pm.

Nothing! Admission to The Studios’ galleries and exhibitions is free during regular gallery hours and First Thursday opening receptions.

The Studios presents contemporary art by local, national, and international artists across several gallery spaces. Exhibitions range from painting, photography, sculpture, and printmaking to installation, multimedia, and interdisciplinary work.

Yes. Many works presented in our galleries are available for purchase. Availability and pricing are listed with each exhibition or can be provided by The Studios staff.

Yes. Current exhibitions and available artwork can be explored online, allowing you to experience the work and make purchases even if you can’t visit the galleries in person.

Absolutely. Supporting local artists is central to our mission. Key West and Florida Keys artists are represented throughout our exhibition season alongside artists from across the country and around the world.

Our classes are open to adults of all experience levels unless otherwise noted. Whether you’re trying something new or building on years of practice, you’ll find a welcoming and supportive environment.

Not usually. Many classes are designed for beginners, while others are geared toward intermediate or advanced students. Individual class listings will indicate any recommended experience level.

It depends on the class. Some workshops include all materials, while others require students to bring specific supplies. Any required supply list will be included in the class description online and sent out in your reminder email from The Studios.

Registered students receive a reminder email approximately one week before class begins. If a supply list is required, it will be included in that email along with any final details about the class.

Yes. The Studios offers a limited number of scholarships each year to help make creative opportunities more accessible. Scholarship availability varies by program.

If you would like to be considered for a scholarship, please contact The Studios before registering. Staff can let you know about current opportunities and the quick and easy application process.

If The Studios cancels a class, registered students will receive a full refund, get a credit on their account, or may choose to transfer their registration to another class when available.

Workshop registrations are fully refundable up to 30 days before the start date. If requested at least 7 days before the class begins, registrations may be converted into a credit toward a future class or event. Refunds and credits are not available within 7 days of the class start date.

Most classes are held at The Studios of Key West, though some plein air and specialty workshops may meet off-site. The meeting location is listed on each class page.

Class sizes vary by workshop to provide the best possible experience. Many classes are intentionally kept small to encourage individualized instruction and meaningful interaction with the instructor.

Classes are taught by accomplished local, national, and visiting artists, writers, musicians, and creative professionals working in a wide range of disciplines.

No. Anyone is welcome to register for classes. Members and Patrons receive discounted registration on eligible workshops as part of their membership benefits.

Events are held throughout The Studios of Key West campus at 533 Eaton Street, including the Helmerich Theater, Hugh’s View rooftop terrace, galleries, classrooms, and other creative spaces. Check the individual event listing for the location of your event.

We recommend arriving 15–30 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow time for check-in, finding your seat, grabbing a drink, and getting settled.

When an event is not sold out, tickets may be available at the door. For popular performances and limited-capacity events, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance.

Yes. Most events at The Studios are open to the public. Any age restrictions or special attendance requirements will be noted on the individual event page.

Yes. Members receive a 15% discounted admission to most ticketed events, with additional complimentary ticket and priority-access benefits available at Patron membership levels.

For outdoor and rooftop events, we keep a close eye on the forecast and make decisions with the safety and comfort of our artists and audiences in mind. Depending on the event, we may delay, relocate, reschedule, or cancel due to inclement weather. Registered attendees will be contacted by email with any changes.

If The Studios cancels an event, ticket holders will be contacted with information about refunds or other available options. If an event is rescheduled, ticket holders will receive details about the new date and available options if they are unable to attend.

Tickets to performances and events are generally non-refundable. For programs offered on multiple dates, exchanges may be available when space permits.

Many performances, openings, rooftop programs, and special events include bar service. Availability varies by event.

All proposals are submitted online through our application platform. Applications typically include a project description, work samples, resume or CV, and any supporting materials relevant to your proposal.

The Local Studio Artist Program provides working artists with discounted rate studio space inside The Studios of Key West’s Eaton Street campus, creating a collaborative environment for artists across disciplines.

Our staff and volunteers are also available when you arrive to help you navigate the building, locate accessible seating, find the elevator or restrooms, or identify a quieter area when available.

The PEAR program is The Studios of Key West’s month-long residency program for visual artists, writers, musicians, performers, filmmakers, media artists, and interdisciplinary creatives from around the world.

Residencies run from the 2nd of the month through the last day of that month.

Residents stay at the PEAR House, a historic guesthouse in Old Town Key West featuring private artist accommodations and shared common spaces centered around a tropical courtyard. It’s right next door to The Studios campus, plus within walking distance of galleries, bookstores, restaurants, world-famous Duval Street, performance venues, and the waterfront.

The PEAR program supports visual arts, literary arts, media arts, musical and performing arts, and interdisciplinary creative practices.

Yes. The PEAR program encourages meaningful connection between visiting artists, local creatives, audiences, and the broader Key West community.

No. Residents are encouraged to use the residency in the way that best supports their practice, whether that involves research, experimentation, writing, performance preparation, collaboration, or developing new work.

Key West has long attracted artists, writers, musicians, and creative thinkers drawn to its independent spirit, layered cultural history, walkable scale, tropical environment, and sense of creative possibility.

The Peyton Evans Artist Residency (PEAR) program welcomes emerging and established visual artists, writers, composers, musicians, performers, media artists, curators, arts researchers, and interdisciplinary creatives from around the world.

Each year, hundreds of artists apply to the PEAR program. Approximately forty artists are selected annually for month-long residencies in Key West.

Applications are submitted online via slideroom.com during the annual open call period. Applicants are typically asked to provide work samples, a project proposal, artist statement or bio, resume/CV, and supporting materials relevant to their discipline.

Artists should apply under the discipline that best reflects the work they hope to focus on during their residency. While many residents work across multiple disciplines, applications are reviewed by panels specific to each category. If you’re unsure which category is the best fit for your practice, we’re happy to help guide you.

We’re interested in artists with a strong creative voice, thoughtful work, and a genuine interest in engaging with the unique cultural environment of Key West and the broader residency community.

Applications are reviewed by panels made up of The Studios staff and guest reviewers with experience in each specific discipline. Visual arts, literary arts, media arts, musical and performing arts, and arts research and development applications are evaluated within their respective categories, allowing each proposal to be considered by reviewers familiar with that field.

Applicants are typically notified within approximately two months of the application deadline, usually by mid-July following the May 15 deadline.

Residents receive a private living space at the PEAR House, access to The Studios campus and creative community, and time to focus on their work in Key West along with some fun community perks like free yoga classes and a bicycle to get around town.

The PEAR House is a historic Key West guesthouse centered around a lush tropical courtyard shaded by a large banyan tree. The property includes private artist residences and shared common areas designed for month-long stays.

Yes. Depending on needs, artists may have an attached or detached workspace included within their residence. With advance coordination, it is possible to have access to workspaces at The Studios campus.

At this time, the PEAR residency program does not provide travel funding or artist stipends. Residents are responsible for transportation, meals, materials, and other personal expenses during their stay in Key West.

The PEAR House includes one ADA-accessible apartment. Artists with accessibility questions or accommodation requests are encouraged to contact The Studios directly before applying.

Accepted residents receive a residency agreement along with information about housing, arrival logistics, residency dates, community expectations, and planning resources for Key West.

Yes. Residents are provided private living quarters at the PEAR House.

No. Residents are responsible for their own meals and groceries during their stay.

Residents are responsible for arranging transportation to and from Key West. Once here, residents are provided with either a bicycle or tricycle courtesy of our partnership with We*Cycle Bicycles.

Usually not. Most residents get around Key West by walking or bicycle, and the PEAR House is located within walking distance of The Studios campus, grocery stores, restaurants, galleries, and the waterfront. There is no dedicated parking.

Yes. Accepted residents receive mailing information prior to arrival.

The PEAR residency program is designed primarily for individual artists. Collaborative teams are welcome to apply together and may be considered based on housing availability and the nature of the proposed project.

Pets are not permitted at the PEAR House.

Overnight guests are not permitted, with the exception of a one-night support traveler during arrival or departure.

Yes. Wireless internet is available at the PEAR House. There are no TVs.

Residents are responsible for providing their own materials and equipment. There are easels or other materials we may be able to provide if coordinated in advance.

The residency is intentionally communal and conversational. Residents often connect with fellow artists, local creatives, audiences, and supporters through shared meals, open studios, events, and informal gatherings throughout the month.

Both. Artists are encouraged to balance focused studio time with opportunities for community connection and creative exchange.

Smoking and vaping are not permitted indoors or in covered outdoor areas of the property.
