Playwriting: Inspired by the Teachings of María Irene Fornés with Julia Izumi (PEAR)
About the Class
Discover new ways into playwriting through techniques inspired by influential playwright and teacher María Irene Fornés. Led by playwright Julia Izumi, students will work through a series of prompts and guided exercises designed to unlock ideas, develop characters and begin shaping material for the stage. Designed for beginning playwrights, the workshop emphasizes experimentation, discovery and getting words onto the page.

Julia Izumi’s works include Regretfully, So the Birds Are (Playwrights Horizons/WP Theater), Akira Kurosawa Explains His Movies and Yogurt… (Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company/New Georges), miku, and the gods. (ArtsWest), Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea (Rorschach Theatre, Helen Hayes Award Nomination), and others.
About María Irene Fornés
María Irene Fornés (May 14, 1930 – October 30, 2018) was a Cuban-American playwright and director, notable in off-off-Broadway in the 1960s. She was first inspired to write while living with Susan Sontag, whom she encouraged at a difficult moment in Sontag’s own writing career. Fornés’s plays range widely in subject-matter, but often relate to the impact of economic conditions on personal relationships. Fornés won many Obie Theatre Awards and was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
