About the Exhibition

Alvarez paints the Florida Keys from the inside out, not as a postcard, but as a place where everyday life unfolds beneath an extraordinary tropical canopy. The series of large scale oil paintings and smaller plein air works offer a portrait of the Keys shaped by light, heat, weather and the small human stories that happen here every day.

Banyan trees engulf houses, blooming tabebuias illuminate quiet streets, chickens wander beneath the branches, and changing ocean weather affects the mood of the day. A master of contemporary realism, Alvarez gives these familiar scenes a heightened sense of scale and presence, treating the lush vegetation of the Keys not as backdrop, but as a living force.

About the Artist

Samuel Alvarez is a British-Spanish painter trained at the Barcelona Academy of Art, where he studied classical drawing and painting rooted in 19th-century traditions. Inspired by artists such as Waterhouse, Zorn, and Sorolla, he works in both figurative and landscape subjects, often painting outdoors in the plein air tradition. His practice focuses on capturing light, atmosphere, and the quiet harmony of nature. Now based in Key West, Florida, Samuel continues to explore classical technique through contemporary themes, drawing on his surroundings and personal experiences to shape his work.
